Congratulations to OLIVIA GRACE HORAN - Senior V Girls Basketball  athlete on being named this week's GRACE #FeaturedAthlete!

Head Coach Anna Green says that Olivia Grace is showing tremendous leadership on the team this year, being very intentional to both encourage and push her teammates to play their very best. She is putting up incredible stats in steals, assists, and points per game. When it comes to heart and hustle, OG is your girl.

Each week we will ask each #FeaturedAthlete some questions regarding their INSPIRATIONS, CHALLENGES, ROUTINES, and RELATIONSHIPS as a GRACE student-athlete.

Here is what Olivia Grace had to say....

INSPIRATIONS -  This season I am aspire to strive for excellence each day whether it be an important game or easy practice. I have played basketball since I was three years old and it is one of the most important things in my life. This season being my last inspires me to give it my all no matter what because I know before realize it, the season is going to be over and so will my basketball career

CHALLENGES -   Obstacles this season have balancing the craziness of senior year while still being dedicated to sports. Another major challenge has been dealing with health issues and balancing pushing my self to be excellent while making sure I don't push my self to hard.

ROUTINES - A typical routine for me, especially on game days, is waking up, getting ready for the day, and usually eating breakfast in my car at school because I never want to get up on time to eat at my kitchen table. On my drive to school every morning I either listen to Christian music or leave it silent and I use that time to talk to God or sort out my thoughts and prepare for the day. Throughout the day I drink a ton of water to make sure I stay hydrated. Right after school gets out I drive home so I have time to get a nap in before I have to be back at the gym. On my way to to the game I listen to my pre-game play list and try to focus my mind on basketball. Leading up to warm up I listen to music and continue to try to focus my mind and eliminate distractions.

RELATIONSHIPS -   My relationship with my coach is very valuable in my life as she has been a great encouragement as well as she has pushed me to be a better basketball player. I appreciate feeling comfortable enough around her to confide in her about life both on and off the court. Also she understands my style of play and therefore is able to coach me in a way I relate to and can grow from. A positive relationship between a player and coach is a very important element to a team as it creates a strong foundation and I am very fortunate to have a great coach like Coach Green.

Congratulations to WILL SOSSAMAN - Senior V Cross Country  athlete on being named this week's GRACE #FeaturedAthlete!

As the NCISSA 2A STATE MEET approaches this Friday, #3 State Ranked runner Will Sossaman wants to end his Varsity running career "with authority".

Each week we will ask each #FeaturedAthlete some questions regarding their INSPIRATIONS, CHALLENGES, ROUTINES, and RELATIONSHIPS as a GRACE student-athlete.

Here is what Will had to say....

INSPIRATIONS -  October 27th, state championship day, is what inspires me. It'll be my last race in a GRACE Christian XC uniform, and I want to end it with authority.

CHALLENGES -  The biggest challenge is dealing with nagging injuries throughout the training grind.

ROUTINES - A typical day consists of waking up with determination, eating a nutritious breakfast (typically a couple of eggs, some toast, and a smoothie), eating some goldfish and almonds 4th period, eating a healthy lunch (always got a PB@H and apple), eating a banana before practice, listening to either trap, country, or motown before practice, training with the squad, recovering with some chocolate milk (the Harris Teeter brand), eating dinner (typically spaghetti), grinding on some HW, watching some football, working out a little bit, then hitting the hay. That's the typical routine.

RELATIONSHIPS -   There are two extremely important relationships within the team, my coaches and the guy's squad. My coaches, the Dolwick's, provide steady encouragement and a sense of peace that helps me stay focused, but relaxed at the same time. The guy's squad provides entertainment and a "young and hungry" mindset that helps me stay "young and hungry" (but special shout out to Tate Scheibner for keeping up with my shenanigans and pushing me in practice)

Congratulations to LUCY COPPEDGE - 6th Grade MS Girls Tennis athlete on being named this week's GRACE #FeaturedAthlete!

Head Coach Robin Pittman says Lucy is a 6th grader leading the middle school girls tennis team as seed #1. This has been difficult for her because she is mainly competing against 8th grade girls. She has had very tough matches, but has kept the best attitude and showed amazing dedication and sportsmanship!  She is a great example of how athletes never give up and keep persevering!

Each week we will ask each #FeaturedAthlete some questions regarding their INSPIRATIONS, CHALLENGES, ROUTINES, and RELATIONSHIPS as a GRACE student-athlete.

Here is what Lucy had to say....

INSPIRATIONS -  I would have to say all of my amazing friends on the team and including those not on the team as well. They all make me want to play better. They also make me feel like I am a good tennis player and I should always try my hardest on everything I do including tennis. They always push me to do the right thing.

CHALLENGES -  Being the top seed of the team really is my top challenge. I feel a lot of pressure to win and helping my team win. Sometimes I even feel I let my team down when I lose. Although all of my teammates are extremely supportive and encouraging.  My opponents are very tough, good players. They're usually 8th graders with more experience in tennis. As a 6th grader, I am still learning how to best handle my position on the team.

ROUTINES - The day starts by my dog, Charlie,  waking me up every morning when I really don't want to get out of bed.  Next one of my parents is usually telling me to hurry up and get to breakfast.  After school I typically have either a tennis match or practice.  Once home from school or after tennis, we eat dinner.  It is common for us to either play a card game or Mad Libs at dinner.  Afterwards, I do homework, and go to bed.  Sometimes my parents and my brother will come in my room at bed time and we all say the Lord's Prayer out loud together.  I like that part of the day a lot.

RELATIONSHIPS -   The relationship I have which has influenced me the most is one of my coaches from a place that I took lessons at called Raleigh Raquet Club. There was a coach there that I took private lessons from named Shaun. He always made tennis so amazingly fun. He always brought the best player he could out of me. More than anything, he made me laugh. He is definitely the person who has influenced me the most in tennis and throughout the season.

Congratulations to WESLEY MEAKEM - SENIOR Varsity Football athlete on being named this week's GRACE #FeaturedAthlete!

Head Coach Boutwell says Wes is a team guy. He has great character and is always the first player to lend a helping hand or words of encouragement to a teammate when down. I'm proud of the way he battled his way back from a season ending surgery last year as well. He worked hard to get back on the field. His character is top notch and he can always be counted on and is respected by his coaches and teammates ?

Each week we will ask each #FeaturedAthlete some questions regarding their INSPIRATIONS, CHALLENGES, ROUTINES, and RELATIONSHIPS as a GRACE student-athlete.

Here is what Wesley had to say....

INSPIRATIONS - JJ WATT

CHALLENGES -  Wes mentioned his greatest challenge is balancing both school and football.

ROUTINES - Wes mentioned making sure that he drinks tons of water the day of the game at school is an important routine. He also mentioned that Pedialyte is also something they drink to help with hydration.

RELATIONSHIPS -  Wes mentioned that one thing he has learned from his coach and team is that no matter what you are doing in life, the outcome is affected by how much effort you put into it.

Congratulations to KATHERINE THARRINGTON - 11th Grade Varsity Volleyball on being named this week's GRACE #FeaturedAthlete!

Head Coach Wolfinger nominated her for showing strong character and team encouragement throughout the high school varsity volleyball season. She has handled some difficulties very well, including injuries and playing a difficult new position.

Each week we will ask each #FeaturedAthlete some questions regarding their INSPIRATIONS, CHALLENGES, ROUTINES, and RELATIONSHIPS as a GRACE student-athlete.

Here is what Katherine had to say....

INSPIRATIONS - My sister is my biggest role model and inspiration and has always been. I admire how she balanced getting straight A's in high school while also being awesome at 2 sports and had lots of friends.

CHALLENGES -  I find it really challenging to balance friends, school and sports and still have time for other things. Sometimes this can just be a lot to handle as a 16 year old and still have time for enough sleep. Specifically with volleyball, this year I've been really challenged to play a new position that I am not the best at playing, but I've learned to work at it for the greater benefit of the team as a whole.

ROUTINES - I start and end each day with my devotion and talking with God to recenter my thoughts on what actually matters. I think it's really important to remember that even though school and sports are very important, keeping confidence in Christ and His plan for your life is more important and by focusing on Him first, everything else comes a little easier. I don't have much of a day-by-day routine other than trying to squeeze in all of my homework throughout the day at school so there is less to do at home after practice/games.

RELATIONSHIPS -  My relationship with my coach and team is extremely strong and fun. Everyone on the varsity team loves spending time together at practice, on the bus to games, and even just getting food and studying after school. We come together over small things and build our each other up everyday. Our coach is very involved and dedicated to each of us which makes talking to him about all kinds of matters really easy. Coach Russ is extremely approachable and never EVER discouraging, he always knows exactly what to say to build us all up and teach us to depend on one another as a team.

Congratulations to CLAIRE BRANTLEY - 10th Grade Varsity Cheerleader on being named this week's GRACE #FeaturedAthlete!

Claire's coaches nominated her for her great character and sportsmanship. She has remained positive and mentored younger athletes with grace and positive leadership!

Each week we will ask each #FeaturedAthlete some questions regarding their INSPIRATIONS, CHALLENGES, ROUTINES, and RELATIONSHIPS as a GRACE student-athlete.

Here is what Claire had to say....

INSPIRATIONS - I get inspired by seeing other cheerleaders work really hard, it pushes me further to do my best so I can get better and help my team.

CHALLENGES - Sometimes after school I really don't want to practice because I am tired or have a lot of schoolwork. So some days it's hard for me to want to be at practice but I always end up having fun with my team and coaches once I am there.

ROUTINES - Other than two practices and a game every week I don't have much of a routine. If i need to work on a new dance or cheer at home so that I can preform my best at a game then I will take some time at home to practice that.

RELATIONSHIPS -  Mrs. Fowler is the best cheer coach I've ever had. She is so nice and cares about all of us outside cheer. She wants to know how we're doing and what we are dealing with in relationships or friendships. She makes practices so much more fun because we have a lot of say in what we want to do. She also has been a role model for me not only as how to be caring and show love to others but she is strong in her faith and it shows a lot. I appreciate her a lot.

Congratulations to SARAH MITCHELL - 8th Grade Cross Country Athlete on being named this week's GRACE #FeaturedAthlete!

Last week, Sarah ran an incredible race in the MS XC Blue Jay Point meet finishing 1st Overall with a time of 11:41!

Each week we will ask each #FeaturedAthlete some questions regarding their INSPIRATIONS, CHALLENGES, ROUTINES, and RELATIONSHIPS as a GRACE student-athlete.

Here is what Sarah had to say....

INSPIRATIONS - Sarah explained her attitude to running is just "Why not just go for it and give it a shot?" She has a "nothing to lose" mentality. Her brother Iain, who also is a previous GRACE alum XC and Track athlete, inspires her to run because he is so fast!

CHALLENGES - Sarah said battling through injuries is her biggest challenge. She explained further that when she focuses on the task at hand with that "nothing to lose" mentality she is able to overcome some of those pains from running.

ROUTINES - A particular routine Sarah has is cheering on, well she said yelling at, her teammate Logan every meet or practice. This apparently is a routine that gets this tremendous runner LOCKED IN to compete as well as encourage and lift up her teammates at the same time!

RELATIONSHIPS - Sarah mentioned she has learned through her coaches and her teammates that she is better than what she think she is. She is encouraged a lot which then instills the confidence she has to continue to RUN WITH NOTHING TO LOSE!

Congrats to Sarah! Be on the look out for next week's  GRACE #FeaturedAthlete
